If we are staying 5 days is it reasonable to spend a whole day downtown - from breakfast thru to dinner ???
Any suggestions about where to eat and anything else to do down there as well as the gambling would be great.
Downtown day???
if you like buffets, try the golden nugget for breakfast and main street station for dinner. main street station is the only buffet that we%26#39;ve actually visited twice. it%26#39;s highly rated and much less expensive that strip buffets. golden nugget is a little fancier, but more expensive. for fine dining, hugo%26#39;s cellar gets rave reviews. reservations required.
i love to gamble downtown, so i could easily spend a full day there. if you play video poker, downtown is much better than the strip. there are also some good but tough poker rooms downtown. at night, they have the light show and street performers. all the hotels are close together, so you can visit every one.
you can see the video poker offerings at specific hotels at http://members.cox.net/vpfree/LV.htm. poker room info is at allvegaspoker.com/las-vegas-poker-games-limi…
Downtown day???
I%26#39;ve been to MSS buffet a couple years ago for lunch and found it to be a great bargain but there have been a lot of less than stellar reviews since then.
Recently, we had lunch at Magnolia%26#39;s and thought it was a great little cafe.
If you haven%26#39;t been downtown, I would join all the slot clubs you can because you are more likely to get free gifts and offers there than you would on the strip. We ended up not needing to buy any souvenirs on our first trip there. I would come after breakfast as its pretty dead in the morning.
Unless you%26#39;re planning to gamble there all day I wouldn%26#39;t bother. Head there in late afternoon when the atmosphere on Fremont St is starting to warm up.
You could spend all day there, for sure, but mainly if you like to gamble and in my opinion ONLY if you plan to stay at night. So, if you were thinking about leaving at dinner time you will miss the best part of downtown, which is when all of the neon comes on and then the people arrive, and the light shows begin, etc. It is an exciting vibe down there in the evening.
My suggestion would be to head downtown aound mid-day. You will find it nice and cool under the FSE compared to the Strip, and you can enjoy the different feel of downtown in the afternoon and then at night when the FSE light show starts and various performers and street artists are out. There is plenty of low-limit gambling to keep you busy.
For an inexpensive, casual lunch, try Bay City Diner at Golden Gate.
A day downtown should be on everyones agenda if staying 5 days.
Another good lunch suggestion is the Upper Deck restaurant at the Las Vegas Club. Good chow at a great price and some really enjoyable tacky atmosphere. Video poker there is good too, as is the California. Also try the VP at Fitzgerlads in the back by the check in desk. (Lots of full pay)
Carson Street cafe at the Golden nugget is a cut above also.
Main Street Station has one of the best buffets in town
here%26#39;s one of my fav sites to read on Vegas casinos:

This should give you a better idea of what Downtown is about.
I don%26#39;t think I would go early morning- I would probably go in the afternoon some time. You can spend your time gambling and visiting the various casinos. I would have a great dinner at Hugo%26#39;s Cellar. If you get hungry later you can always get some fried twinkies or oreos! And watch the spray paint man! Here is the web site for downtown:

I agree with most of the others - unless you are going to gamble maybe all day would be too long. But you could go into all the properties and check them out. A must however is to be there by 6:30 and see the Fremont Street Experience canopy show. I have also heard, but not been there yet, that there is some kind of neon museum down there, planning to get there next trip as next trip we want to stay downtown instead of the strip for a change.
Don%26#39;t forget to visit the Jerky Store!
